A Drawing Lesson on Texture Drawing
Introduce some basic techniques of drawing by having the students enjoy a quick and easy lesson on textures. Remind students they can use these drawing lessons for other artwork they create.
- 9 x 12 cartridge drawing paper
- 4B pencils
- Chart paper, chalkboard or whiteboard
Step 1 Preparation
Have students divide their paper into 6 or 9 boxes. Number the boxes in a small corner. Demonstrate on chart paper or whiteboard how you would like the paper oriented and divided. Remind students this is for practicing each texture.
Step 2 The Hairy Texture
In square 1, show students how to draw the hairy texture. Demonstrate how to draw hairs with small lines moving in a diagonal, curved way, away from the paper. Have the lines taper rather than be equal in width. Make sure the lines are not equal distant apart. Do not draw the hairs in a straight line. Show an example and move around the room to give advice as they practice filling the square.
Step 3 The Bubble Texture
In square 2, show students how to draw the bubble texture by starting with 1 larger round circle. Then draw medium and small circles near it and touching it. Try to draw only a few large circles. Make a complete circle rather than an open circle so it looks like a bubble. Students may want to draw a small square inside the circle for a bubble with a light shining on it. Try to fill the entire square as you check and help students.
Step 4 The Wood Grain Texture
Draw the wood grain texture by beginning with a long oval. Surround the oval by drawing lines which come close to the oval and to each other in long smooth curves. Create another widened space to fit in another oval. Make sure the ovals are not too wide. Try not to draw parallel lines. Have the lines come closer and then farther away from each other. Look at the surface of a wooden table for real-life examples. Remind students that this wood texture is not like the surface of a tree or its bark.
Step 5 The Wavy Texture
Draw the wavy texture by drawing upward curving but unequal waves fairly far apart. This should be drawn close to the bottom of the square. Draw waves in behind the first line of waves. As you draw up the square, draw the waves closer to the front line of waves. Draw the waves flatter as you go up. Remind the students that this is like choppy waves near a boat that flatten as they are farther away from you. The waves should be forming a horizon line about halfway up the square and should not fill the square.
Step 6 Other textures
Continue to fill in the remaining squares with textures such as the basket weave, rocky, bushy, cloudy, and crater textures. Give hints to the students as to how you should and should not draw the lines. For example, in the basket weave, draw 3 lines equal in length and try to draw 3 lines horizontally that create an exact pattern. In the cloudy texture show flattened shapes for clouds rather than the usual fluffy, curly lines for clouds. In the rocky texture, make sure rocks are not peanut shaped but have a flattened bottom.
Draw the examples for students to see on a large whiteboard, chalkboard or chart paper. Have a copy of a completed square to show them what they are trying to achieve. Use a book on drawing simple textures to provide examples for the students.
Hint and Tips:
- Each student should be reminded that this is practice and they can start over if they feel they are not achieving the desired effect. Do not grade this lesson.
- Do not worry if the students don’t completely fill in the square although some will want to continue until it is filled.
- Practice without an eraser. Just draw over existing areas as this is practice at sketching.
- Have students create and name their own texture in one of the boxes.
- Bring in examples of textures in books and paintings that have been illustrated without color.
- Have the students use the textures in a simple drawing immediately after practicing them. They could create a beach scene with a picnic basket, clouds, waves and nearby bushes. They could create a wooden textured table with chairs in a basket weave. They could use the hairy texture on an animal drawing such as a bear, dog, spider or any other hairy animal. Have them draw a stone house or the three little pigs' houses.
Use this drawing lesson for the basic techniques of texture drawing which can be completed in a 20 minute session. Students will enjoy practicing the texture drawing in further drawing lessons such as drawing a realistic hairy spider for a Halloween project. Try using the stoney texture on a stone house and then making it more realistic with a drawing lesson on shading.
