If you're a Sunday school teacher looking for lesson plans appropriate to your preschool Sunday school class, you'll love this fruit of the spirit prek lesson plan. Using a different fruit each week to showcase a fruit of the spirit, you'll be sure to draw your students' attention.
Teaching about the Fruit of the Spirit
The "fruit of the spirit" are love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, and self control. Although meant symbolically in the Bible, young children will relate to a lesson involving actual fruits to help teach these Biblical concepts. Make your fruit of the spirit study a part of your snacktime too by serving the fruit of the week.
Fruit of the Spirit Tree
Introduce a new fruit of the spirit each week by giving each of the fruit of the spirit a corresponding fruit to match. For example, the apple will stand for love, a peach for gentleness, an orange for joy, etc. As you add a new fruit each week, place a construction paper fruit on a tree posted in the classroom. By the end of the study, you'll have a fruit for each fruit of the spirit. As you go over the fruit of the week, be sure to go back and review the ones you've already talked about during previous lessons.
When you discuss a new fruit of the spirit, write the name of the fruit down on a chalk board or chart paper. Ask students to give an example of this fruit of the spirit. They can describe something they have done to demonstrate the fruit. If you are talking about kindness, students will give some examples of ways they can show kindness in their daily lives. This will make the fruit of the spirit more realistic to students.
Apple "Love" Necklace
Before you begin this fruit of the spirit craft, talk about the importance of showing love to each other based on the scripture:
(John 13:34-35) "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Objective: Students will gain a better understanding of love as a fruit of the spirit.
construction paper apples with hole punched in top
glittery heart stickers
strips of yarn--about 24 inches long
Write the word love on one side of the construction paper apple. Place a heart sticker on the other side of the apple. Have students string the apple on the yarn, and tie a knot in the yarn. Now slip the necklace over the student's neck to wear.
Ask students to name a way we can show love to one another, to determine understanding of the concept.
