Make Masks with your Toddler: 3 Project Ideas
Paper Plate Masks
Paper plate masks are the granddaddy of all mask toddler crafts, as they’re simple to make and versatile. Paint or color a paper plate, or just leave it white. Have your toddler draw a face on the mask, and help them cut out holes for their eyes. Use a hole punchers to punch a hold on either side of the mask, and string yarn through the holes. Place the plate over your toddler’s face and tie the two pieces of yarn together at the back. If your child likes animals, you can add ears made of construction paper or whiskers from pipe cleaners to the mask.
Buy a cheap white mask from a craft store – they often come in packs that contain multiple masks. Give your toddler craft supplies to decorate the mask, such as markers, feathers, sequins, and beads. Show your toddler how to glue the feathers to the mask so that they stick out from the sides or the top.
Alternatively, cut out a piece of poster board so that it covers only your child’s eyes and forehead. Make sure a notch in the bottom of the mask leaves space for your child’s nose. Use tape to attach a long stick, such as a dowel, to the side of the mask. Show your toddler how to hold the stick so that the mask is over his or her eyes.
Bits and Pieces Masks
Look through magazines with your toddler and find large pictures of faces. Identify the facial features and cut them out. Then have fun mixing and matching different facial features until you find a combination that your toddler loves. One eye may be smeared with makeup, and the other may be from a baby – or even from an animal. Help your toddler glue the facial features on a piece of cardboard or poster board, and attach a Popsicle stick at the bottom. Cut holes into the centers of the eyes so that your toddler can see, and let your toddler model her bits-and-pieces mask.
Have fun with these kids' mask crafts for toddlers, and make sure that your toddler does too. Then sit back, relax, and watch your toddler show off her mask to everyone who walks by!
